This is a portrait of my son. While I did want to depict my little muse, I also aimed to paint something sensible and relatable to any or most viewers. In his gaze, we can feel him observing in an open minded state. That purity of judgement let’s us mirror our own state of mind and emotions into his gaze. Isn’t it what children are? They are always influenced or weighted by the biases of the people around them. Their families, friends, teachers, even their heroes or political figures, have an impact on their vision of the world. When we see our children we see shards of us in various degrees. That’s what inspired the title, Mirroring shards of us.
